ARE UNIFORMS CLOSING RANKS?

Above: Timothy Egan in his investigation interview tells Sgt. Jenkins, "I was told this whole thing was a done deal. That the City of Sparks didn't want to press charges."

On February 10, 2023, the Sparks Police Department sent a request at the urging of Maureen's family to investigate the assault to the Washoe County Sheriff's Department. This request came after weeks of Maureen's family being stonewalled by the City of Sparks. To be clear, the request was sent to WCSD by Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth after the children of Maureen met with he and Sparks City Attorney Wes Duncan and demanded it.

Shortly after being handed off to the Washoe County Sheriff's Department, Sgt. Josh Jenkins reached out to Maureen's family. He said after watching the video, it was not a question if Egan would be charged but what he would be charged with. Because an assault with an injury carried the charge of felony assault, and an assault on an elderly person carried even more weight. When Maureen and two of her children met with Sgt. Josh Jenkins at the Sherriff's Office, Jenkins subtly indicated he was leaning toward felony charges against Egan due to Maureen suffering a traumatic brain injury as certified medical documents provided to him at this meeting substantiated.  During this meeting the family discussed that a private investigator had been reaching out to them. When Sgt. Jenkins learned of this he instructed the family not to speak with the PI due to there was an active investigation going on into the matter (the family would later realize WCSD was manipulating them to prevent the story from surfacing to the public). When the family left his office, Sgt. Jenkins advised them he would have the investigation complete within a couple of weeks.

Below: Egan states he refutes the assault video in his interview with the Sheriff:

"She had a scarf across her face and a hoodie jacket...alls you could see was her eyes and nose..."

"She was rooting through the trash cans, I assumed she was homeless..."

"When she hit me in the back of the head with that can of cat food I pushed her to the ground, she spun around did a 180 and landed on her face..."

"I thought SHE KNOCKED HERSELF OUT."

                                                              --- Timothy Egan

Watch the assault video on the homepage and you will see her face is not covered, she was not digging in the trash, she didn't hit him in the back of the head with anything (Egan came up behind Maureen), and she didn't knock herself out...Egan knocked her unconscious when he leg swept her face first into the ground.

Instead months went by with Sgt. Josh Jenkins stalling and stating he needed additional time. Then the Sheriff's office fell silent and stopped replying to inquiries by the victims family. Finally in late April as this story began breaking to the public, the family learned on the evening news that the Washoe County Sheriff's Department had completed their investigation, returned it to the Sparks Police Department, and Timothy Egan would not face charges for the violent assault on 84-year-old Maureen Hvegholm.

Upon hearing this on the news, the family could not believe this was true. So they began calling the Washoe County Sheriff's Office to inquire but they would not return their calls. Finally, after repeated attempts to reach someone in the department the family were informed by Lt. Frank Eubanks the Washoe County Sheriff's Department could not share the results of the report with them...yet they had shared it with KRNV news who broadcast it on television.

A copy of the report was recently obtained from the Sparks Police Department (it's available above).  The results of this report defy any common sense. If the assault had not resulted in serious injury to Maureen or happened to an elderly person which of itself carries additional penalty, this report might be comical.  But the assault did result in serious injury to an 84-year-old woman.  The report is sloppy and hastily pulled together as though a 12-year-old wrote it for a school assignment - it's as though the Sheriff's Department was in a hurry to get it out. It is an embarrassing example of investigative work. In some instances of the report information is simply inaccurate - like Egan stating Maureen was wearing a face mask - that's not even the story Egan gave them, and she clearly is not when one watches the video. Or when Egan stated he had a leg fracture so he simply could not have assaulted Maureen...yet in body cam footage Egan is heard telling responding police officers he's still waiting on an MRI. It seems there was a discussion which occurred inside the Sheriff's Department between the time Sgt. Jenkins met with Maureen's family and the publishing of this report. What we can say happened for sure, is Timothy Egan was sued in this timeframe...it is the singular thing the family knows happened and believes they are protecting him by publishing something so outrageous.

The conclusion of the report states that even with a video it is not clear what preceded Maureen getting upset with Egan - this is a bold-faced lie. Video clearly demonstrates, and Maureen's statement supports it...Egan came up behind her, leaned in and around the front of her, grabbing her things out of her hands...after which a struggle ensues. As Maureen's son, Marc states on body cam video, "He (Egan) was grabbing the food out of her hands as fast as she was putting it down."  The assault upon Maureen is so trivialized that Sgt. Josh Jenkins calls it the equivalent of a street fight between two 'evenly equipped' individuals. Complete madness. It is an absurd and disgusting summation by what can only be surmised as a crooked law enforcement agency.

Discussions between the Washoe County Sheriff's Office and the family are ongoing.
